The central bank issued its new 100 yuan bill on Thursday. The new banknote is design for easier identification by vending machines and automatic teller machines. The most obvious change is the gold figure of 100 in the middle of the note. There are also some other technical changes to prevent the faking of the note. Printing started about a month ago. This is the third 100-yuan edition of the fifth series of banknotes introduced in 1999. The second edition was issued in 2005. Some Chinese residents say they like the new version. "I think it's better than before," said a resident in Shanghai. "It looks more like money with the kind of shiny powder on it," said another resident. That’s taking it a step closer to becoming one of the first major central banks to issue digital money that can be used for anything from buying noodles to purchasing a car. For users transacting over their smartphones or laptops, a PBOC-backed cryptocurrency probably wouldn’t seem much different to existing payment methods such as Alipay or WeChat. But for sellers, they would get digital payments directly from the buyer, lowering transaction costs as the middleman is cut out of the process. At the same time as it builds up its own capabilities, the PBOC is increasing scrutiny of bitcoin and other private digital tenders. It do...

  • Chinese Central Bank Edging Closer to Backing Yuan With Gold

Could gold, the world's longest running currency, be used to create a new order in global currencies? The Chinese central bank is said to be considering backing its yuan with the yellow metal. This move, says Ken Hoffman, Global Head of Metals and Mining Research for Bloomberg Intelligence, would be a 'game changer.' Why would China consider such a move? Hoffman explains that Chinese policy makers are already trying to establish the yuan as a reserve currency, and backing it with gold would help attract foreign capital inflows. China is expected to receive approval from its central bank for a yuan-denominated gold fix, with a potential for an announcement as early as next week. Hoffman explains that a gold standard would not necessarily create a big constraint to the Chinese central bank, ...

When the system is ready, the central bank’s pilot digital bank acceptance exchange platform will be connected with the existing Shanghai Commercial Paper Exchange to form a national platform for bank bill transactions, said a person close to the central bank. In previous discussions on the subject, the PBOC has inferred that China's digital money will be legal tender backed by the central government, and will enter circulation alongside traditional paper bills.

The move comes two months after the previous cut in August, and marks the fifth such reduction in 2015. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) slashed the one-year benchmark bank lending rate by 0.25% to 4.35%, and the one-year benchmark deposit rate by 0.25% to 1.5%. The reserve requirement ratio, which sets the minimum amount of deposit a bank must keep, is reduced by 0.5%. 중국 인민은행 4000억위안 유동성 공급 China′s central bank has been infusing a large chunk of cash into its financial system,... to help support the economy from spurring capital exodus, and ahead of the Lunar New Year′s holiday. The announcement by the People′s Bank of China, Thursday marks the third cash pumping this week. For details we turn to Shin Se-min The People′s Bank of China continued to ease liquidity strains for its financial system, injecting a total of 114-point-four billion U.S. dollars of cash,… all announced on Thursday. China′s central bank said it would pump in 400-billion yuan, or 60-billion dollars using reverse-repurchase agreements, the most in three years,… and this will be followed by another injection of 352-billion yuan,… or 53-billion dollars via the mid-term lending facility. The world′s second largest economy is aiming to counter the rising threat of capital outflow which is expected to coincide with the Chinese Lunar New Year′s holiday,… a time when the demand for cash rises. During the whole holiday week starting February 8thChina′s entire financial system will be shut down,… with the demand for cash expected to rise by some 455-billion dollars. It′s the second kind of liquidity support made by China′s central bank this week. Earlier on Tuesday, the People′s Bank of China injected 91-billion dollars into the banking system through short-and mid-term loans to its lenders,… a move considered a substitute for monetary easing. China has been trying to hold borrowing costs down to help prop up the economy without prompting a capital flight. According to Bloomberg, an estimated 843 billion dollars of capital flew out of China in the eleven months through November of last year,… pressing policymakers to inject funds into the financial system to prevent interest rates from rising. The liquidity support is considered a substitute for a reserve-requirement ratio,… as overdoing it could put too much downward pressure on short-term interest rates, eventually destroying efforts to stabilize capital flows. Global markets and raw material have seen a modest up-tick at the news, but liquidity remains a problem for banks. Here's that story. In an effort to get more cash flowing into the economy, the Chinese central bank eased its requirement for how much cash banks need to hold in reserve. The half percentage point drop is meant to make it easier for Chinese banks to make loans and it should spur growth and spending. This is the latest move in China's financial balancing act, where the ruling Chinese Communist Party has sought to maintain a steady growth economy in the face of falling demand for exports, a housing and real estate cool-down, and high inflation. Even with this slight easing of bank reserve requirements, liquidity remains a major issue for Chinese banks. Steps taken over the past year to mandate higher cash reserves for banks came, as consumer price inflation seemed to be spiraling out of control. Though the BBC reported that inflation in China was down in January—at about 4.5-percent—too much easing of reserve requirements carries the risk of reversing the trend.

China’s central bank is going digital. After assembling a research team in 2014, the People’s Bank of China has done trial runs of its prototype cryptocurrency. It doesn’t want a bitcoin bubble to blow up. And since currencies have historically been issued by the state, not private players, it doesn’t want to cede the cryptocurrency space to companies it has no control over. China’s central bank said on Monday that a new 100-yuan banknote will be put into use from Thursday, November 12. According to officials, counterfeit prevention is at the center of this upgrade, and the design has been updated so that it could be more easily identified as a 100-yuan note. Hoffman explains that a gold standard would not necessarily create a big constraint to the Chinese central bank, as many believe. 'It could be at any price they fix. There's a lot of things that they can do to make this work,' he says. Hoffman estimates that to create an exchange rate of one ounce of gold for every $64,000, the country would need about 10,000 metric tons of the metal. 'That's nine times the national official holdings and about 6 percent of all the bullion ever mined globally,' Hoffman says.
